Overall Context

The skill development requirement in India is shaped by the country's rapid economic transformation, and the need to bridge the gap between education and employability. India has one of the world’s largest youth populations, but a significant portion lacks the skills required for current & future job roles.

The current scenario says that over 62% of India's population is in the working-age group (15–59 years). However, only 20–25% of the workforce is formally skilled, compared to 50–75% in developed countries. Large gap exists between education qualifications and market-relevant skills. The informal sector dominates employment (around 80%), with limited access to training & learning.

Having very good Key Government Initiatives like Skill India Mission (2015), National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), Sector Skill Councils (SSCs), National Education Policy 2020, etc. the crucial challenges those need attention are- Mismatch between training and job requirements, Inadequate quality control and limited standardization in training, Limited awareness in rural and semi-urban areas, Lack of industry participation and on-the-job training, etc.
